Durbar Square Guide
Kathmandu Durbar Square: A Living Museum of Nepali History and Art Guide
Kathmandu Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the heart of Kathmandu's old city. This historic square is a complex of palaces, courtyards, temples, and statues that showcase the rich artistic and architectural heritage of Nepal. Stepping into Durbar Square is like stepping back in time, offering a glimpse into the lives of the Malla and Shah kings who once ruled the Kathmandu Valley. The history of Kathmandu Durbar Square dates back to the Licchavi period (4th to 9th centuries AD), but its golden age was during the Malla dynasty (12th to 18th centuries AD). The Malla kings were great patrons of art and architecture, and they transformed the square into a magnificent display of their power and devotion. The Shah dynasty, which succeeded the Mallas, continued to add to the square's grandeur. The devastating 2015 earthquake caused significant damage to many of the structures, but restoration efforts are ongoing to preserve this invaluable cultural treasure. Visitors can explore the numerous temples, including the Taleju Temple (only open to Hindus), the Jagannath Temple, and the Shiva Temple. The Kumari Ghar, home to the living goddess Kumari, is another highlight. You can also visit the Tribhuvan Museum and the Numismatic Museum to learn more about Nepal's history and culture. The square is a vibrant hub of activity, with vendors selling handicrafts, religious ceremonies taking place, and locals going about their daily lives. The area surrounding Durbar Square is filled with restaurants offering Newari cuisine, known for its unique flavors and dishes like Yomari (sweet rice cake), Bara (lentil pancake), and Chatamari (rice crepe).
