Kathmandu Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the heart of Kathmandu's old city. This historic square is a complex of palaces, courtyards, temples, and statues that showcase the rich artistic and architectural heritage of Nepal. Stepping into Durbar Square is like stepping back in time, offering a glimpse into the lives of the Malla and Shah kings who once ruled the Kathmandu Valley. The history of Kathmandu Durbar Square dates back to the Licchavi period (4th to 9th centuries AD), but its golden age was during the Malla dynasty (12th to 18th centuries AD).
